Each row is a fashion PLM, 3D garment tool or design marketplace, linked to the documents read for it. An answer rests on that vendor's own sentence; a question its documents never answer is shown as not stated, and the silence is recorded.

Each vendor's own published terms were read through estate-fetch and stored whole (sha256 on every row). For every document, four questions were answered from the vendor's own words: who owns the business's data, vendor keeps aggregated or anonymised use, training AI on the business's data, export at exit. Every stated answer carries the sentence it rests on, checked against the stored text; 'not stated' means the document read does not address the question. A vendor with several documents reads 'varies' where they disagree. 10 vendors, 14 documents.

The process

  1. Say what the archive holds, prints, tech packs, 3D garments or fit data, and which platforms it sits in.
  2. We check those platforms' clauses on our board and the copyright and design-right rules a textile design falls under.
  3. You get a written reply about your own archive and decide whether anything follows.

No fashion PLM, 3D garment tool or design marketplace paid to be on this board, and the site has no affiliate links. Each answer is our reading of a public document, not legal advice on your own agreements or rights. How the site is paid: if a brand, studio or mill licenses its design records to a buyer this site introduced, our fee is 12.5% of that deal, with a minimum, as its exclusive agent, or 10%, with a minimum, when its records join a bundle or the pool, agreed in writing first; a fee a buyer pays us is credited back to the seller.

The questions we get

Can a fashion brand sell the designs held in its PLM?
Only what it owns, and the PLM's terms come first. On our board 5 of 10 vendors leave the designs with the customer; Onbrand, for one, says customer content and all the intellectual property in it is the exclusive property of the customer.(Textile PLM software data terms)
Does CLO keep a right to my 3D garments?
You keep ownership, but CLO-SET's additional terms grant CLO a licence to aggregate and analyse your raw data and to make commercial use of the anonymised derived data, which they say includes trend analysis and new products.(Textile PLM software data terms)
Do fashion PLM vendors train AI on our designs?
9 of the 10 vendors we read say nothing either way. CLO's general terms say it and its service providers may use AI content to maintain its machine learning features and improve the services.(Textile PLM software data terms)
What happens to our designs when the PLM contract ends?
World Fashion Exchange says customer data is permanently deleted once the service ends, and Spoonflower that deleted content is no longer available. Onbrand says a customer can export its own content and should keep backups, so take the archive out before you cancel.(Textile PLM software data terms)
Is a fabric print protected by copyright?
In the US a two-dimensional print can be: the Supreme Court held in Star Athletica that the surface decorations on cheerleading uniforms were separable and eligible for copyright protection. In the UK the unregistered design right does not cover surface decoration, so a print relies on copyright instead.(Star Athletica v. Varsity Brands)
Who pays for designs and fashion images used in AI?
Shutterstock says contributors receive a share of the contract value when customers license datasets, and Adobe pays Stock contributors whose content was considered for Firefly training a bonus. Alamy pays commission on licensed images, and Nyne and Troveo license company data.(Textile data buyers)
